about

This is a song I wrote years ago when I was writing the solo performance piece "How not to Make Love to a Woman," a show I wrote as a response to what it felt like to leave an abusive marriage. The show was performed in Phoenix, Arizona multiple times and was performed in Itacaré, Brazil as part of my dissertation fieldwork. This song is the closing number of the show. It asks us all to recognize that we are all wounded lovers in this world. Our task is not to find the perfect mate, but to find someone with whom you can share and compare scars and stories and find a compatibility in our different experiences. So it seems apropos that my partner in life and creativity, Mike, would help me write the music for the poem. And now, after all this time, we are finally recording it for posterity. We hope you all are able to find your wild oak partner so you can savor your joy together in the morning sun.

lyrics

Wild Oak Kiss

I’m walking through the garden
Admiring the young sprouts
With my water bucket
Which one needs my water spout?
Walking through the garden
I see an orchid flower
Pour my bucket over
Watch it wilt and drown

Chorus
I cry my tears and fill my bucket and move on
Cry my tears and move on
Cry my tears, fill my bucket, and move on

Wandering through the garden
I see a thirsty cactus flower
Sprinkle drops of water
Pour my bucket over it and watch
Sitting in the garden
With my empty water can
Stab that prickly cactus
Watch it bleed into my hands

Chorus

With my water bucket, I learn to move on

I’m in a grove of oak trees
Majestic towering oaks
Climb up in the branches
Trace the lines deep in the bark
Hold on to this oak tree
Grab my water can
My water fills the cracks
As I nestle into the branch

Second Chorus
My wild oak kiss, a hint of berry, like a fine wine
I savor it and rest in the arms of my oak
My wild oak fills my water can with dew
We savor it in the morning sun, the wild oak kiss
