about

Last summer we were jamming on a riff that sounded really bright and positive. Since both of us tend to have rather dark approaches to our creative expression (blues and metal, respectively) we challenged ourselves to write appropriate “happy cheerful” messages for this new song. Of course, we couldn’t do it without a bit of irony and dark humor throughout the piece. We imagined this might be a song that summer camp counselors would play to their brand new young campers who were feeling scared and homesick. Of course, the messaging here is not exactly the most comforting, but in the end, … “you can have the time of your life, if you just face up to your fears.” Happy summer to all of you!

lyrics

Enjoy a walk in the woods, but don’t stray off the trails.
Beware of poison ivy and oak, and skunks who might show you their tails.
Enjoy all the boats on the lake, but don’t go in the water.
We got the results last week, EColi might be a problem.

Please don’t cry. We’re all happy campers.
Dry your eyes. We’re all happy campers.

I know at first this might seem scary without your mom and dad around
But think of all the friendships you are making
By the end you’ll all be crying tears of joy.

I hope you brought insect repellant. The bugs here have mutated.
Even though the screens don’t work, your bed sheets have been upgraded.
You can make all the noise that you want. There’s no around to hear.
You can have the time of your life if you just face up to your fears.

Please don’t cry. We’re all happy campers.
Dry your eyes. We’re all happy campers.

I know at first this might seem scary without your mom and dad around
But think of all the friendships you are making
By the end you’ll all be crying tears of joy.

Despite what the lawyers have said, doing chores is not child labor.
Don’t worry about spiders and snakes, but watch out for alligators!

Please don’t cry. We’re all happy campers.
Dry your eyes. We’re all happy campers.

Please don’t cry. We’re all happy campers.
Kid, don’t cry. Or I’ll put this on YouTube. And I know how!
I know at first this might seem scary without your mom and dad around
But think of all the friendships you are making
By the end you’ll all be crying tears of joy.
