about

I sometimes like to get up early and take a dip in the pool. It helps clear my head and it helps all the body aches and pains get a little easier to bear. One fine summer day last year I was in the pool doing a meditation right around sunrise. As I got out of the pool, the basic bass line for this song was in my brain just aching to be put down. So I grabbed my phone and sang the line into my camera. We put it on the back burner until the shelter-in-place orders came. Then we realized what the song was supposed to be. Sometimes those blues that you get at dawn are simply the feeling you get when the relaxing weekend you’ve had is coming to an end and you have to deal with that “Sunday morning comin’ down” feeling. But these days, the blues at dawn can get pretty dark rather quickly. I tried to imagine a variety of perspectives of folks who are experiencing the pandemic: from the point of view of loss of income, loss of friendships, and even the loss of a loved one. Sometimes the best thing I can do is just take a deep breath and realize that this is not the end.

lyrics

On Friday, I woke up, it was the last day of classes.
Saturday we all went out to shake our asses.
By Sunday, I started to feel all alone.
Monday’s comin’ round again. I got the blues at dawn.

Stand up. Breathe deep my friend.
Life goes on. The sun comes up. This is not the end.

On Monday I woke up thinking everything was normal.
On Tuesday my whole world went through a cosmic wormhole.
On Wednesday I found out about COVID-19.
By Thursday I was preppin’ my house for quarantine.

Stand up. Breathe deep my friend.
Life goes on. The sun comes up. This is not the end.
Blues at dawn, I’ve been dancing all night long.
Don’t make me go back home, where I’ll be all alone. Blues at dawn ...

On Thursday I got word that the market crashed.
On Friday my bank told me they lost all my cash.
Saturday I found out it was dark money all along.
Before the weekend’s over I got the blues at dawn.

Stand up. Breathe deep my friend.
Life goes on. The sun comes up. This is not the end.
Blues at dawn, the sunrise has got me thinking.
Don’t want to get on board a ship that’s slowly sinking. Blues at dawn ...

On Tuesday I got word “We don’t want your kind.”
On Wednesday I went to the bar and drank myself half blind.
On Thursday I found out that a friend is dead and gone.
Thank God it’s Friday. I got the blues at dawn.

Stand up. Breathe deep my friend.
Life goes on. The sun comes up. This is not the end.
Blues at dawn, I’ve been drinking all night long.
Don’t make me go back home, where I’ll be all alone. Blues at dawn ...
